It was September 2022, when Hill Innovation Justice invited us, along with one of my colleagues, Hawa, at Xalgoob, to participate in the Justice Entrepreneurship School Programme in Nairobi to support organisations working to solve the most pressing justice problems across East Africa. I went to Aden Adde International Airport at 11:00 a.m. The departure was scheduled for 1:00 pm, and everything was going well.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
Upon our arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I was filled with excitement as it was my first time landing there. The time was 6 p.m. in the African time zone. The airport itself was incredibly huge and beautiful, with many captivating sights catching my eye. However, without wasting any time, we proceeded to the visa checkout area designated for international passengers. We got out, and we found Joseph waiting for us at the airport exit gate and taking us to the Hotel Amani Gardens, Church Road, Westlands Nairobi.
The Hotel
Hotel Amani Gardens was an amazing and historic place in the country, only 5 km from the city centre and about 20 km from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It’s close to major shopping malls, banking centres, and restaurants, yet the place still retains the feel of a retreat in the countryside with old English-style buildings and ancient trees.
The Programme
The Justice Entrepreneurship School was HiiL’s flagship incubation programme in Kenya, Rwanda, and Somalia that supported early-stage entrepreneurs who were preventing or resolving pressing justice needs in their communities. The programme was catered to startups in the incubation stage, where there was a minimum viable product or service but no traction, and ran for 6 weeks. Focused on delivering high-quality action learning, the programme concentrated on business modelling, storytelling, pitching, and justice design thinking.
During the incubation programme, startups worked on getting their product into the hands of users as fast as possible, aggressively and consistently obtained their feedback, and refined the MVP accordingly. This included getting a large enough number of users and running tests on them.
With the Hiil Team
We met people who have been communicating for a long time but haven’t even seen each other. It was an amazing day for an inspired and regional network to meet the Hiil Team. they were a small team with experienced backgrounds dedicated to making an impact on the justice system across East Africa.
My Organisation
Halgoob Mediation is a mediation and dispute resolution channel that provides different alternative dispute resolution methods, especially for family disputes, in Banadir Region, Somalia. We facilitate access to justice and provide effective forms of dispute resolution by acting as a neutral and impartial third party. Customers prefer the services we provide instead of going to court, which is time-consuming and a financial burden for customers. To avoid this, people reach
us through the Internet (websites and other social media). The most important thing about our service is that we provide a result that is of mutual satisfaction to both parties.
